The interviews, structured into four distinct chapters, have been skillfully transformed into a non-verbal performance, with each chapter serving as a unique segment. In this process, I synthesized responses from various artists to create a cohesive soundtrack, blending original compositions with sound clips I created. This approach ensures that all audio elements are free from copyright restrictions. (Published music used is indicated below in the references.) The primary goal was to enhance the dramatic storytelling of the performance through sound, with most of the music comprising my own original compositions.
The interviews themselves provided a rich landscape that facilitated the seamless adaptation into a stage piece. A particularly noteworthy collaboration occurred with pianist and composer Jonathan Moon for Chapter 3, titled “Confront.” The soundtrack for this chapter was created without disclosing any details about the interviews beforehand, resulting in a genuinely collaborative musical piece. The decision to withhold information regarding the interview themes and questions aimed to prevent any potential influence on the respondents' answers. Therefore, direct collaboration was essential; the only guidance I offered to Jonathan was the directive to “do whatever you want.” Ultimately, I believe “Confront” stands as a successful collaborative work that significantly enriched both my research and the performance itself.
Given that the soundtrack inherently conveyed a narrative filled with nuanced information, I concluded that a non-verbal approach would be the most appropriate for the performers. In honoring the individuality and unique stories of each artist, I chose to appear only during the moments when my interview responses were presented. It was paramount for me to be perceived as a third-party figure, effectively breaking the fourth wall for the audience. This was achieved through the use of elaborate wigs and makeup to create a distinct persona. The transitions between chapters were visually represented through a diverse array of costumes.
Chapter 3 is particularly critical within the performance, marked by numerous dramatic turning points due to the weighty nature of the questions posed:
-
Were there any moments when you faced challenges in your life?
-
How did you move forward? How did your artistic world react to your life?
-
At that time, how did you feel about your relationship with your artistic world?
My responses delved into my invisible pain and injuries, intertwined with my reflections on Christianity. It was vital to navigate these themes with an appropriate balance, avoiding both excessive heaviness and triviality. In stark contrast to other segments, where performers danced in vibrant costumes and played musical instruments, my contribution in this chapter consisted solely of a black leotard, engaging in a performance art piece characterized by the repetitive act of peeling black tape from my body. This act served as a poignant representation of my struggles and a process of reconciling with my pain, effectively portraying the journey of an artist seeking a deeper connection with their art.
Although my physical presence was limited, the research itself symbolized a tree with various branches, culminating in a grand, interconnected landscape. I personally perceive this performance as a beautiful manifestation of another emerging theme: “All Roads Lead to Love.” The audience’s engagement with this moment transformed it into a profound and visually captivating work on stage.
