Nien Chin Chai

Composer

PHOTO-2024-09-29-04-44-07.jpg

Chai Nien Chin is a Malaysian composer graduated from the Royal College of Music in London, and currently studying at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance with both Dr. Deirdre Gribbin and Stephen Montague, supported by the GREAT Scholarship and the Gareth Neame Scholarship. Her unusual route to starting composition has highlighted her resilience and determination in pursuing goals. She was a pianist at the RCM, studying with Andrew Zolinsky, but the onset of focal hand dystonia had first forced her to play with her left hand alone briefly, which she won awards during this period, then its deterioration eventually hindered her from progressing further. Without prior training in composition, she managed to leap over the gap and re-enter the RCM as a composer, subsequently having her compositions and orchestration played in workshops and recitals, and eventually completing the remaining two years of studies at RCM. Her highlights include a mixed quintet featuring both historical Western and Eastern instruments for the first concert of the RCM Museum Concert Late Series, a solo prepared harp piece for the Contemporary Music in Action Concert (CMiA), a duo for the Dartington Summer Music Festival, and the curation of Trinity Laban CoLab installation ‘The Confessional’. This unique hybrid experience gives her insights into various perspectives, allowing her to communicate with musicians and different departments efficiently, be flexible in adjusting promptly, open to new ideas, and always excited to carry out collaborations. Both the logistic managements and the execution of creativity are handled with deftness.

Quincey Kawahara

Dancer

Quincey Kawahara (she/her) is a dynamic and curious Asian-American contemporary movement artist and performer based in London, UK. Born and raised in Los Angeles, California, her love for dance blossomed in the foothills of the Angeles mountains where she trained in jazz, ballet, and contemporary for 15 years. Coming from a competitive dance background, she became eager to broaden her understanding of dance under a more critical lens. As a result, she attended the University of California, Los Angeles to earn a Bachelor of Arts in World Arts and Cultures/Dance, where she studied under dance scholars Susan Leigh Foster, Peter Sellars, and Ann Carlson and trained with Gracie Whyte, Ros Warby, and Victoria Marks. Interested in the dance scene abroad, she has continued her training overseas, pursuing a Master’s in Dance Performance at London Contemporary Dance School under the instruction of Tom English, Tina Afiyan Breiova, and Andrew Sanger. During her time in London, she has gotten the opportunity to explore the realms of physical theatre with Hannes Langolf, become more exposed to contemporary commercial work with Benjamin Jonsson, and perform award-winning repertoire with Jenna Jalone. Coming from a multicultural background and also navigating migrating to a new country, she is currently interested in the inner workings of her identity and how this bleeds into her own work as a performer and mover, both consciously and subconsciously.
